DIY Non-Toxic Matcha Lemonade Body Scrub

Summer is almost upon us and you know what that means…

Days spent in the sun slathering on the sunscreen, self-tanners, sweaty hikes, afternoons at the pool, etc.

Summer is all about being active and outdoors, and our skin can really take the brunt of this if we aren’t careful.

Many people don’t know this, but one of my more serious childhood dreams was to own a spa.

Growing up, I had an inexplicable love for “lotions and potions” as my dad would call them. I was obsessed with making my own beauty products, learning about spas and treatments all over the world, and researching the top product lines.

Don’t ask me where I got this from…no one in my family was as obsessed as I was, it’s just been an innate passion from the time I was little. I was a tiny myrrhophore in the making, I suppose!

However, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve become increasingly discerning about the products I put on my skin.

I am no longer interested in what the latest beauty influencer has to say or what the top-selling products are at Sephora.

These days I am far more interested in where I can get the highest quality, all-natural (or as close to it) products that will actually support my body instead of damage it.

If you know anything about my story, you know that I struggled with hormonal acne for years until I went the natural route.

That experience showed me first-hand how much the chemically-laden products I’d relied on for years were actually disrupting my hormones and perpetuating the problem they were touted to solve in the first place.

These days, my passion is finding the best all-natural (or as close to it), non/low-toxic products that are still highly effective, but also safe and nurturing for the body.

So today, I’m pleased to kick-off a new series of DIY Non-Toxic Summer Essentials using my favorite doTERRA essential oils! Without further ado, let’s get started…

DIY Non-Toxic Matcha Lemonade Sugar Scrub

Makes enough for 1 use

Directions:

  1. Add matcha powder to cane sugar and mix.

  2. Add 1-2 drops doTERRA Lemon Essential Oil.

  3. Add 1-2 teaspoons of fractionated coconut oil. Start by adding a little bit of the oil and mix thoroughly before adding more. If you like a dryer texture, add less oil. If you like a more liquid-y texture, add more oil. I personally like mine to have a kind of a “dry slushy” texture (you’ll see what I mean when you DIY), so I err on the side of less liquid and more mixing until it gets fluffy/slushy-like. You can also add a touch more matcha if you want a bit of a stronger scent, but don’t do more than 2 teaspoons.

A few notes…

  1. You’ll notice that unlike most recipes, this is a single use instead of a big batch and that’s on purpose.

While you certainly can make bigger batches and keep it in an airtight container in your shower, I find that making bigger batches tends to compromise the texture of the final product. And with a body scrub, texture is the whole point.

I like making a single-use portion, because then I know nothing is going to waste and it turns out just the way I like it every time. It’s also no more effort than making a cup of coffee :)

2. How to Use It:

I recommend using this 3-5x/week in the Summer.

If you use a self-tanner (and btw, Beauty by Earth makes the best low-tox one), I recommend exfoliating at least every other day and moisturizing your skin daily. These are the keys to prolonging your tan!

If you’re outside, in the pool, sweating a lot, or wearing sunscreen/bug spray, doing a gentle exfoliation every day will be helpful to remove any sweat, grime, or product build-up.

3. Can I Use Substitutions?:

I do not recommend using a different kind of sugar in this recipe.

Coconut sugar is typically too fine and will dissolve too easily into the oil, while raw or turbinado sugar tends to be a little too coarse and can be rough on the skin. Brown sugar might work, although I have not tried this myself. I actually buy cane sugar specifically for body scrubs and don’t really use it to bake with.

Let’s talk about the scent for just a second…

This Matcha Lemonade combo smells truly divine and if you’ve never smelled a bottle of doTERRA lemon essential oil you are missing out.

It’s crisp, uplifting, and smells like pure sunshine in a bottle.

Fun Fact: Did you know that it takes approximately 7 pounds of lemon peel to produce one bottle of doTERRA lemon essential oil?

One of the things I learned very early on is that when it comes to essential oils, purity is absolutely everything.

There are so many adulterated oils out there masquerading as the real thing, but the sad reality is that most “essential oils” you see are synthetic (and often just fragrances) rather than the actual volatile aromatic compound.

The reason this matters is because synthetic oils and fragrances do not have the same supportive properties as a pure essential oil does. So, while you might get a product that smells okay (but really does anything synthetic smell as good as the real thing?), you aren’t going to get the full benefits the plant has to offer.

Unfortunately, this means that the oils you see at the health food store, drug store, or even beauty stores, no matter how convincing their marketing is, are tricking you into thinking you’re getting a natural option, when really you’re just getting chemicals in disguise.

doTERRA’s pure Lemon Essential Oil is harvested sustainably in Italy and Brazil and can not only be used to make a delicious smelling body scrub, but is also excellent for digestive health, mood support, freshening the air, cleaning and polishing wood, removing sticky residues, easing nausea, and promoting detoxification.

That’s a lot of uses from one tiny product!

If you want to experience the doTERRA difference for yourself or you’re just eager to make your own super simple non-toxic products at home this summer and want 25% off your doTERRA essential oils, I can help you out here.

Alright friends, that’s it for today! Keep checking back for more great DIYs this summer!
